Giving back isn’t just about giving money. Sure, charities will gladly accept monetary donations, but your time and expertise is worth much more than money. Consider instead some of the following ways in which just about anybody at any age can help those in need.
Business owners are often reluctant to hire unskilled workers due to the amount of time and money it may take to fully train them. However, unskilled workers can be hired to do any number of tasks within just about any business. While there, many of them would gladly give up some of their time to learn, off the clock, how to perform a higher paying job. Whether you’re a business owner or somebody who volunteers some of their time to teach an unskilled worker how to do a job, with a little bit of time and patience, one who was once unskilled can become skilled.
Teaching children how to give back is an invaluable learning tool. As parents, we’re responsible for teaching our children about those in need and showing them how to best help. Children will respond well to helping other children. Consider putting together a group to clean up a local park or ask your children to volunteer some of their time with food and toy drives.
Everybody would love some Mikimoto jewelry, but the fact is that most cannot afford it. That being said, if you have a skill or talent that allows you to make money, consider holding classes at your local outreach center or community center, teaching your skill to others. Things such as knitting, candle making, embroidery and more handicrafts can be taught to others that they might make and sell things to make some extra money.
Giving back should be about the joy and gratification you receive from giving and from knowing that you’ve given somebody in need something that they can truly use.
